Description
The smart energy ecosystem is considered as the next-generation power system, which promises self-healing, resilience, sustainability and efficiency to the energy Critical Infrastructure (CI). As the smart energy and power grid paradigm is reaching every house and building, the potential of attracting cyber-attackers towards getting access to the underlying systems and networks is getting larger. Cyberattacks have become increasingly sophisticated, stealthy, targeted and multi-faceted. As a result, incidents like power outages, brownouts and blackouts are likely to happen and they may affect not only the energy domain but all the interconnecting devices and infrastructure. Thus, it can be easily understood that strong cyber-defence measures are needed which should be combined with sophisticated strategies in the Electrical Power and Energy Systems (EPES) domain, where cutting-solutions should guarantee high level of cyber-security and resilience. Furthermore, the support of self-healing mechanisms like isolating a problematic region of the grid and providing energy management and trading solutions among various energy actors in case of emergency is an extra advantage concerning the EPES resiliency against cyber-attacks. To this end, SDN-microSENSE aims at providing and demonstrating a secure, resilient to cyber-attacks, privacy-enabled, and protected against data breaches solution for decentralized EPES by employing a set of advanced cutting-edge technologies targeting at: (a) performing collaborative and distributed risk assessment involving all energy actors, (b) strengthening EPES domains with self-healing capabilities based on islanding and fast grid recovery processes exploiting renewable sources, © enabling effective energy exchange between microgrids and residential prosumers, (d) implementing a large-scale cybersecurity solution by integrating innovative components for detecting and preventing cyberattacks, privacy violations and various threats, (e) building a decentralized security information and event management (SIEM) tool for decision support concerning anomaly detection and response enhanced with advanced machine learning capabilities, (f) realizing an end-to-end privacy framework that involves all types of users and stakeholders to protect against data breaches, (g) demonstrating and validating all tools/systems/processes through detailed real-world scenarios with emulated/simulated cyberattacks, and (h) contributing to international standardization activities for promoting sustainable and compatible EPES cybersecurity approaches.
Within SDN-microSENSE ITI is responsible for the technical and quality assurance management of the project, the development of an energy trading engine based on blockchain technology taking into account smart contracts between micro-grid operators and contributes to the implementation of SDN-SELF components .
